It’s Christmas time in Victorian London. On patrol, police officer Peterson witnesses a fight between a gentleman and some thugs. At the sight of the police officer everyone runs off, the gentleman leaving being his hat and a Christmas goose. While cooking the goose – for what else can be done with it – Peterson’s wife discovers a priceless gem in the crop of the bird, the very stone stolen a few days earlier from the Countess of Morcar. High time for Peterson’s friends Holmes and Watson to take a closer look at the gentleman’s hat and begin to hunt for the thief…

…followed by dramatised readings of other short stories with a Christmas/winter theme in the second half on the programme
